Little Britain meet Littler
Britain |
|
"Stu, how about a trip to
Portsmouth?" Gav was excited and I knew
that he had had a "Brilliant"
idea.
"OK? Why?" It's the last night of the Little
Britain Tour in Portsmouth and we can try to
meet Matt and David" The decision was made, it
seemed like a good idea and we would get a
chance to see the chaps close
too.

The journey
to the Guildhall was uneventful and swift,
thanks to our trusty Tom Tom, the dulcet
tones of the lovely lady melting away the road
rage. Here's a thought, wouldn't it be great if
Tom Tom did the Little Britain
characters?
"Yeah, but, no, but, yeah, but, no, err, we'll
Marsha says to go right but she's suchhhh a
cow..."
or
"You're the only Gay in this village".
Something to think about guys, another market
for you to expand into...
|
|
So, anyway, we get to
Portsmouth, park up and go and find the
Guildhall. The venue is located on one
side of a pedestrianised market
square type arrangement with Portsmouth
Uni Lining two of the other three sides.
It is a large building with a clock tower
and a set of imposing steps up to a
door, the type of imposing frontage you
see on American court room dramas with
lots of press hanging about ready to
interview the witness or acquited
billionaire, you get the
picture.
We go in through a small door at
the bottom of the steps and take a brief
look at the merchandise, there is a
plethora, a veritable pantheon of
goodies, mugs, mousemats, t-shirts,
souvenir programmes, hoodies, emblazoned
with all your favourite catchphrases, and
a brisk trade was being done, way to
clean up chaps!
|
|
|
Gav bought a programme and we
took our leave and went around the
building to scout out the best place to
spot the chaps as they left. The stage
door was easy to find and after scoping
it out we decided to retreat to a nearby
cafe to plan our next move.
So from professional lookalikes to
professional stalkers in a matter of
moments - we know where you are for the
next 7 months (cue manic
laughter, Meu-hahahahah).
Food, Glorious
Food
We found a lovely little spot to eat, not far
from the Guildhall called La Croissanterie
which did a stunning line in Baguettes, Paninis
and a pretty damn fine cup o' coffee. So if you
are passing, pop in and tell 'em we sent you.
(cheers guys).
We finish our vittals and
prepare for the impending face to face.
We have bought some flyers with us,
hopefully we can hand a few out to some
of the audience as they exit, hey, they
are our target audience and someone may
just book us.
|
|
|
|
Eventually
the doors swing open and as the audience
disperses we hand out the
flyers, which are well received as
"Programme Bookmarks"! After a quick trip
back to the car park and a few more
leaflets are handed out we nip back to
the stage door. Or as near as we can get
because there is now a scrum of about 50
avid fans are being held back by a crowd
control barrier and four well toned
bouncers.
The Lesser Spotted
Walliams We
then get our first sighting of David
as he strides purposefuly towards the
assembled throng, who go nuts, it's every
man, woman and child for themselves.
Actually the pushing and shoving had
a very restrained "Britishness" about it
and people were trying to remain polite
even as they crushed up against others,
not making eye contact for fear of having
to make way and let another person go in
front of them. We stood at the back
trying to catch glimpses of our man and
I suddenly knew how David
Attenborough must have felt, the journey,
the hunt, the wait, spotting the prey,
snatched glimpses, hehehe. Anyway I was
chatting to about this, turned back
to the scene for about 10 nanoseconds,
went to make another comment to Gav and
he had disappeared. As I looked back at
David I suddenly spotted , shaking
David's hand and chatting to him. He had
performed some kind of Ninja crowd swerve
and had gotten himself to the front.
Respect Gav, he moves quickly for a fat
chap.
Eventually Gav extracated himself and we
retreated, he was a bit shell shocked but
was well happy that he had managed to shake
David by the hand, and glad that David hadn't
shaken him by the throat. David
had asked Gav if we were going
to do London shows, there wasn't much
chance to chat about anything else due to the
pressure of the occasion but that's fine. David
met Gav.
Round Two - The
Revelation
Gav took a respite and had a fag to calm
himself. Which was when we saw the
changing of the Guard, David vanished to be
replaced bt Matt, Gav was up for round
two... With the speed of Lindford Christie
and the tactics of a seasoned commuter Gav
swept to the front of the rabble, which had
gotten a bit more raucaus as it had been joined
by some students on a pub crawl dressed in
dressing gowns. Still, undetered Gav met Matt.
Shook him by the hand, and had a brief
chat.

|
Gav "Hi there, Matt"
Matt "It's isn't it?... I have a picture
of you on my notice board... I think you guys
are great."
Gav "Wow, thanks. David has asked us to do the
London gigs"
Matt "(laughs) Are you going to do our mums
too?"
There was some more banter which I couldn't
quite hear, but it was just chit chat and Gav
can't remember as he was just living in the
moment. I didn't push forwards, being the shy
retiring type and not wanting to intimidate the
lads with both of us right up in their
faces.
So that was when (one half of) Littler
Britain met Little Britain, and we found out
Matt has Gav's pic on his notice board (Kenny
Craig if you must know). So as a tribute to
Matt and for those who might not be able to
quite picture it here is our artists impression
of what it might look like (if it had been put
on his fridge).
