Matt started his career as a standup at the tender age of just 18 in 1992, as his comedy creation Sir Bernard Chumley. Five weeks after his first gig Bob Mortimer of the comedy duo Reeves and Mortimer spotted him and so began his long association with that anarchic comedy double act. He appeared at the Edinburgh Festival in 1994 as Bernard Chumley in the very funny Bernard Chumley and Friends show, co written with his friend and writing partner David Walliams they returned in three subsequent years and gained a cult following.
1994 was the start of Lucas' television career appearing in The Smell Of Reeves And Mortimer, and also launching himself into the first of four series of that other BAFTA award-winning show Shooting Stars as George "He's a Baby" Dawes. He has also collaborated with Reeves and Mortimer on several other projects: It's Ulrika, Bang Bang It's Reeves And Mortimer and Randall And Hopkirk Deceased.
Lucas and Walliams' series Rock Profiles spawned by UKLive's 5 minute Rock Profiles entrenched their position as heirs to the comedy double act throne. But no one foresaw the absolute humungous success of Little Britain, which has now exceed his mentors' previous success. Little Britain, developed initially from a BBC Radio 4 show, which won a Silver Sony Award, won Best Comedy Show and Performance gongs at the 2004 Royal Television Society Awards and a BAFTA for Best Comedy Series.
Lucas has used his talents to craft copy for a large number of newspapers and publications and has employed his comedy genius for other comedy talents including Sacha Baron Cohen's best known screen persona Ali G (another connection to Ali G!). He has appeared on stage and the big screen, popping up in a cameo roles in the film, Shaun of the Dead and the TV Show, Casanova. He has also extended his theatrical experience returning to the stage as that flamboyant 80's icon Leigh Bowery in the original cast of the Boy George-scripted musical Taboo.
