LITTLE Britain comedy
star David Walliams today revealed he and Matt
Lucas would love to perform a North Pier summer
season.
The double act will return to Blackpool next
week to perform the stage version of their
television smash hit show.
And Walliams today told The Gazette: "I'd be
happy to do a season there. I love all seaside
towns and Blackpool is the biggest of them
all."
The news comes as a massive boost to the future
of the beleaguered North Pier theatre which
will remain closed this summer.
The Six Piers Company, owned by millionaire
Leisure Parcs boss Trevor Hemmings, announced
earlier this month the famous theatre will not
open after a slump in ticket sales.
Today, Walliams said: "Matt and I don't have
any sense of snobbery when it comes to where we
appear.
"We played to four people at our first
performance together so it's a shock every
night when I see thousands of people out
there.
"If the product is there and it's what people
want to see then they will come and see
it."
The Gazette launched its Save Our Shows
campaign after Six Piers pulled the plug on the
theatre's once-thriving summer shows.
Hundreds of readers have already backed the
campaign to keep live entertainment at North
Pier.
An angry Freddie Starr said Blackpool was
"finished" after selling only 252 tickets for
his Blackpool Opera House show while Jim
Davidson has frequently voiced his dislike of
the town.
But Walliams - who has already performed to
more than 12,000 Little Britain fans at four
sold-out nights at the Opera House - hit
back.
He said: "Blackpool has a great tradition of
comedy and showbusiness.
"I think it is really beautiful, it's a magical
place and it's absolutely stunning on the
seafront at dusk when the sun is setting.
"I'm a man of simple tastes."
The award-winning LIttle Britain is back at the
Opera House on May 8 and 9 at the request of
its stars.
Sidekick Matt Lucas said: "We are filming the
DVD of the stage show there because we loved
the audience on the last two occasions.
"They were just fantastic and really joined in
with the spirit of the thing.
"When we decided to do a DVD both of us said
separately to each other that Blackpool was the
ideal place to do it."
Walliams added: "The Opera House is a great
space.
"We have found the further North we have
travelled the better the response has been -
and Blackpool was absolutely the best."
And the comedy couple are throwing open the
invitation for as many people to come dressed
in character as possible.
"We always get a number of people dressing up -
usually blokes dressed as the "laydees" Emily
and Florence but for the Blackpool filming we'd
love to see as many different characters as
possible."
Some tickets for both nights are still
available.
